SAHWA (“awakening” in Arabic) was a collaborative interdisciplinary research project involving socio-anthropological, economic, political, sociological and cultural approaches to study youth trends and perspectives in the context of social, economic and political transitions in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries.
SAHWA’s ambition was to link specialized expertise in youth studies with a comprehensive analysis of current political and socio-economic transitions. The project brought together 15 partners from Europe and the Mediterranean region, including a number of leading research centres, around the following thematic areas: education, employment and social inclusion, political mobilization and participation, culture and values, international migration and mobility, gender, public policies and international cooperation.
SAHWA has laid the foundation for an extensive cooperative research enterprise in the region and paved the way for a systematic analysis of youth trends in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries.
