ANIMA, represented by Zoé Lucon, Senior Expert, actively participated in the international conference on the regionalization of value chains in the Mediterranean, organized by Sciences Po Aix, a member of the network, on Friday, June 2, 2023. This prominent event brought together political, diplomatic, economic, and academic figures from both shores of the Mediterranean to discuss the ongoing economic and geopolitical dynamics on a global scale, particularly in the Mediterranean region.

The Director of Sciences Po Aix, Rostane Mehdi, and Karim Amellal, Ambassador and Interministerial Delegate for the Mediterranean, delivered warm welcoming remarks to mark the beginning of the event. Nasser Kamel, Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, then delivered an opening speech emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in the context of value chain regionalization. Professor El-Mouhoub Mouhoud, President of the University of Paris Dauphine and an expert in economics, presented an overview of the recomposition of global value chains and the new logics of globalization, setting the stage for the subsequent discussions.

Renowned international experts led two panel discussions, exploring the constraints, opportunities, and means to promote the regionalization of value chains in the Mediterranean. The first panel focused on the Mediterranean’s role in this process, while the second panel concentrated on strategies to facilitate value chain regionalization in the Mediterranean.

In between the panel discussions, participants had the opportunity to network and engage in discussions during coffee breaks and the lunchtime cocktail. The day concluded with a summary and conclusion of the proceedings, followed by a closing cocktail reception, allowing participants to further connect and strengthen their collaboration.

This international conference was a resounding success, providing a privileged space to discuss the economic and geopolitical challenges related to the regionalization of value chains in the Mediterranean. The exchanges between experts contributed to a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges of this transformation, as well as the identification of actionable measures to foster closer economic cooperation in the Mediterranean region.
