5th Annual Forum MedThink 5+5

From 13 October 2021 to 14 October 2021

Within the framework of the MedThink 5+5 network of Western Mediterranean think-tanks, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) is organizing with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and Casa Árabe, the 5th Annual MedThink 5+5 Forum under the title “What prospects for the 5+5 Dialogue in a Mediterranean in transformation? Adapting together to the post-COVID-19 realities”, to be held on October 13-14, 2021, at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid.

This year’s annual forum will take place within the context of the Spanish co-presidency of the 5+5 Dialogue and with the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation of the Government of Spain.

It will tackle the important transformations that are likely to impact the future of the Western Mediterranean in the post-COVID-19 era while exploring opportunities of sectoral cooperation in the region. The pandemic has revealed the scope of the shortcomings of our socioeconomic systems, highlighting in turn the need to move towards shorter and integrated supply chains, a digital economy, and a sustainable development, to improve the resilience in the face of future crises. Within each of these transformations, the event will outline avenues for reflection on opportunities for sectoral cooperation in the framework of the 5+5 Dialogue, echoing the Commitments for a new ambition in the Mediterranean of the Summit of the Two Shores in June 2019 in Marseille, as well as the priorities reflected in the “New Agenda for the Mediterranean” released by the EU High Representative and the European Commission in February 2021.

Following the successful editions of Barcelona, Lisbon, Algiers and Malta, organised with the Union for the Mediterranean, this fifth edition will gather high-level experts, practitioners, and policymakers to debate transformations of the production model, the digital transition, and the sustainability transition in the Western Mediterranean from multidisciplinary perspectives.
