The MADRE project (Metropolitan Agriculture for Developing an innovative, sustainable and Responsible Economy) aimed to initiate a transnational Mediterranean cluster of metropolitan agriculture, and to make it a key factor for the sustainable economic and social development of the territories.
The objective of MADRE was to change the food supply model of metropolises by capitalizing on existing good practices, by giving responsibility to the different actors of urban and peri-urban agriculture and by initiating a dynamic of transnational cooperation in the Mediterranean region. The MADRE project has supported 6 Mediterranean metropolitan areas to take up several challenges specifically related to urban agriculture such as food security, job creation, environmental quality, social links and territorial solidarity between urban and rural areas.
MADRE collected existing information and experiences on innovations in metropolitan agriculture. Capitalized in a catalogue of best practices, these results were disseminated via an online platform. Operational solutions were shared at national and transnational levels to foster the creation of a Mediterranean metropolitan agricultural cluster.
